Cars with a Twist

When I was going on my drift walk, my main focus was trying to find different rhythms in nature.  In my attempt in doing this, I focused on specific patterns in nature or in the construction of something.  One of the patterns I discovered was the cement blocks that made up my town's main road and how a deep crack separated the blocks into equal length sections.  I started to record on the sidewalk next to the street to see if I could hear any rhythmic sounds created by these separations.

Train!

I first heard the train through another one of my recordings.  The train passing by was one of the background noises to one of my other sound clips.  I discovered that the train track was right behind me, down this hill.  I raced to the bottom of the hill and stood right next to the track.  Once again, my main focus was to try to catch some natural rhythms that people normally wouldn't notice.

Wind Chime!

I had a lot of harsh, rhythmic sounds, so I started to focus on finding soft, melodious sounds instead.  I wanted to bring variety to all my audio clips.  I discovered this wind chime when I was walking down a completely empty street.  You couldn't hear a single sound until, when the wind picked up, this chime just rang out.

Flag Flapping in the Wind

I was passing by a garden when the wind picked up and this flag in that person's yard went crazy.  Normally I wouldn't have attempted to get this sound, but the flag was so low to the ground that it was easy for me to get close up to the flag.  I was so close that the flag itself hit me in the face during certain wind gusts!  But after listening to my recording, I thought this was more than just a flag flapping in the wind because, being that close to the flag, I was able to record other flag sounds you normally wouldn't notice.

Birds vs. Truck

I like this sound clip because I enjoy the juxtaposition between technology and nature.  This is one of my sound clips that is focused on one object, but, if you listen closely, you can hear many other sounds.

My Drift Strategy!

I wanted to keep my walking strategy simple so I did an algorithmic walk going left, right, left, right. I did this entire walk in my neighborhood, which is very quiet, but I still got some pretty good sounds. I started on my town's "main" street and worked my way into the residential areas.

Enjoy!
